PC-SIG has recently shared the roadmap for PCI-Express port upgrade, PCI-Express 4.0 port is coming in 2017. The roadmap further tells that we may see PCI-Express 5.0 by 2019, just after two years to launch of PCI-Express 4.0.
The last upgrade PCI-Express 3.0 came nearly seven years ago. Since then, tech giants have made the maximum out of I\O bandwidth of PCI-Express 3.0. But, a saturation point reached few years ago and now PC-SIG is aiming to launch PCI-Express 4.0 by next year.
PCI-Express 4.0 standard will increase the bandwidth to double, from 32Gb/s to 64Gb/s. The new standard will also increase the interconnect frequency to 32GHz.
The image shown below also tells that PCI-Express 5.0 will have double the bandwidth then 4.0. This could potentially harm the momentum of manufacturers as most of the hardware may get outdated once PCI-Express 5.0 launches.
Regardless of the roadmap by PCI-SIG, one thing is for sure that we will see PCI-Express 4.0 by next year. We expect tech giants to use the double bandwidth and increased interconnect frequency while manufacturing their top tier hardware.
Let us know what do you make of the announcement PCI-SIG has made recently. Do you think PCI-Express 5.0 will come out by 2019, just after two years to 4.0? Let us know your thoughts in comments section below and meanwhile, check out the images.
