BioWare is introducing a new alien specie in Mass Effect: Andromeda called the Kett. The new race holds great meaning for the storyline as at least one of them is confirmed to star as a villain in the upcoming role-playing game.
Based on early illustrations and concept art, the Kett are grayed-out humanoids that are covered in skeletal bone-armor. According to art director Joel MacMillan, the Kett were initially penned to be a naked race. However, ongoing development caused the writers to cover them up because BioWare wanted players to empathize with them.
“We took the perspective of ‘maybe these guys are so alien we don’t understand what they’re doing visually,’” said MacMillan. “Do they even wear clothes? Are they more carnal than our previous aliens? Or are they more enlightened and clothing’s a vanity thing and maybe it’s not part of their culture? In the initial sketches we actually pushed that forward for quite a way.”
Based on Game Informer’s ongoing coverage of Mass Effect: Andromeda, the Kett are your antagonists in the storyline. However, that doesn’t mean you won’t come across helpless Kett civilians who don’t want anything to do with their leaders. A lot of story-telling elements can be a part of this; expect to come across situations where innocent Ketts are being harassed by others. As the player, it’s your decision to make as to whether you ignore or help them.
As trivia, BioWare fans from the UK might fight the Kett odd. This is because the word means shit in that part of the region.
We’re now awaiting the release of the game’s first gameplay trailer in December.
Mass Effect: Andromeda is scheduled to release in Spring 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. . The month of March has been highlighted as a suitable release window but the publisher is yet to give us concrete confirmation.
